katchor at the movies

What with Tintinmania all over cinemaland … there's people speculating about other comics to bring to the big screen … and so here's some dreams of mine: Jeunet & Caro getting back together to work with Boucq on some Jérôme Moucherot story. Michel Gondry finally making his masterpiece inspired by Franquin. Wilhelm Busch's Max und Moritz by Herzog. But most of all: Julius Knipfl or any other Ben Katchor creation by Hirokazu Kore Eda - assisted by Martin Scorcese, for his knowledge of NYC. OJoe Apichatpong Weerasethakul interpreting Katchor's "Cheap noveltiesin collaboration with Woody Allen, why not. Or even Kar-Wai Wong or Anh Hùng Trần assisted by some James Toback, Paul Schrader or other. (RIP Jun Ichikawa.) Just as long as the mighty Abel Ferrara isn't involved - Katchor's work is way too subtle for that ;-) Can't see Amos Kollek doing it either.

future of the usa … with a werner voiceover

Media_httpphotosaakfb_fydoz

"Struggling with its immortality, a discarded plastic bag (voiced by Werner Herzog) ventures through the environmentally barren remains of America as it searches for its maker, the young woman who took it home from the store and eventually abandoned it." The full episode of Ramin Bahrani's "Plastic Bag" will go online on 2010-08-03, but Fb members can already view the 1'15" trailer here or via the FS fanpage on Fb(Sigur Rós fans note that the soundtrack is by Kjartan Sveinsson! Hehe, and what a sweet voice der Werner has. If ever he's out of a job as a director - hopefully never - he's still got a bright future reading books and voiceover lines! Btw for more on Herzog, click the tag to read my previous posts, which feature lotsa links.)

Meanwhile, don't expect too much from (the links to) http://futurestates.tv/ yet, at this particular point in time (i.e. before 2010-03-08). For more on the director (probably most famous for 2005's "Man Push Cart"), click the links under his name above, or check these:

But what's that Future States thang, you ask? San Francisco's Independent Television Service (ITVS) has announced "Future States", "a new online fictional series to explore visions of life in a future America" (read: USA). The project is part of their "strategy for a sustainable competitive public media", and apparently, the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB, "a private corporation funded by the American people") is involved too. We wish them all the best. From our old continent (aka RoW) point of view, it's fascinating to follow what is and might still be happening in the USA in its transformation form a world superpower backed by the almighty dollar to a nation finally trying to deal with its sustainability, health & homeless problems, to name but a few. For the Obama momentum … soit, that's been & being discussed way too much already. Positive project wise … "ITVS worked with over 20 of today’s best and emerging indie filmmakers to complete the 11 films to make up FutureStates. Contributors include acclaimed director Ramin Bahrani, whose mini-feature entitled "Plastic Bag" is narrated by the legendary Werner Herzog, Greg Pak‘s "Mister Green" and Tze Chun’s "Silver Sling". “Even though FutureStates is a fictional series, we want to engage viewers in a conversation about our world,” says Matthew Meschery, ITVS director of Digital Initiatives. “In many ways, imagining the future helps us come together around the challenges we face today. FutureStates is definitely not a tv series,” adds Meschery. “It’s a transmedia program for your computer, your phone, and your tv too.”" Source : http://itvs.org/pressroom/press_detail.php?pressId=6687

First we take Hollywood, then we take Berlin … even bigger Herzog news on http://www.werner-herzog-film.de/collection.html :

The Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum für Film und Fernsehen has taken the Werner Herzog Collection, a collection of works by the author and director, into its archives. See also http://www.deutsche-kinemathek.de/ + http://www.museumsportal-berlin.de/news/einzelansicht/article/4/deutsche-kine... + check the Herzog tag below for lots more on der Werner. Hallo Deutsche Bahn, hallo Lufthansa?

herzog runs "rogue" film school (+ collaborates with lynch)

Via the (non official) fan page dedicated to Werner Herzog on Fb - http://www.facebook.com/wernerherzog.ds - I've just learned the most fascinating news: our favourite living director Werner Herzog has opened a film school. (Maybe the news is quite old, I don't know, but I thought I'd (re)share it anyway.)
http://www.wernerherzog.com/index.php?id=38
http://www.roguefilmschool.com/

In "Herzog on Herzog" (London: Faber and Faber 2002 - http://www.faber.co.uk/work/herzog-on-herzog/9780571207084/ - ISBN 9780571207084) der Werner had already developed the most fascinating plans for a film school. Check pages 12 to 16 via http://books.google.be/books?id=ydN_2oj8M0wC - or else try http://www.rowthree.com/2008/11/15/on-filmmaking-werner-herzog/ - for an introduction to Herzog's exciting vision, one that is also consistent, incidentally, with his walking from Munich to Paris on foot in 1974, as documented in his book "Vom Gehem im Eis" (1978 / 1981) - http://www.fischerverlage.de/buch/Vom_Gehen_im_Eis/9783596183470 - ISBN 9783596183470, translated in English as "Of walking in ice" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Of_Walking_In_Ice -, in French as "Sur le chemin des glaces" - http://www.pol-editeur.com/index.php?spec=livre&ISBN=2-86744-137-4 - and in Dutch as "Over een voettocht door de kou" (no info on Prometheus publishers' site).

Then, after visiting Google Books, do go out and order the full "Herzog on Herzog", as it is one of the very best books I've yet read on film making, and an utter must for everyone who loves both the personality and the movies of Werner Herzog. (Thank you Paul Cronin for insisting and ultimately convincing Mr. Herzog to have himself interviewed so diligently.) On pages 227-228, you'll find Herzog commenting on his eight part, 240' film documentary "Film Lesson" (Vienna, 1991).

(Am a tad sceptical about the "Bad lieutenant" remake - Ferrara's film was perfect as it was and who can possibly better Keitel's role - but still ... can't wait to see it - and "My son, my son, what have ye done" too. And what to think about Lynch teaming up with Jodorowsky?!?)
